Before the British handed Hong Kong to China in 1997, the British government has transferred many sensitive colonial documents to its archive in London. More than 20 years after the handover, many of the documents concerning the Sino-British negotiation are finally released – and they reveal a lot of details which Hong Kongers have never known. “Home, and a Distant Archive” portrays the four women aboard in London who volunteered for Decoding Hong Kong’s History, a project digitalizing the documents from the British National Archives, and their thoughts on identity, diaspora and their home in troubled times.

SINOPSE / Synopsis: Babás mistura elementos autobiográficos com uma reflexão sobre a presença das babás no cotidiano de inúmeras famílias brasileiras, tocando em um tema raro na produção audiovisual contemporânea. Fotografias, filmes de família e anúncios de jornais do século XX constroem uma narrativa pessoal sobre uma situação em que o afeto é genuíno, mas não dissolve a violência, evocando em alguns aspectos nosso passado escravocrata.

Nannies is a documentary film that combines autobiographical elements with a reflection on the presence of nannies in the daily life of countless Brazilian families, approaching a subject quite rare in contemporary audiovisual productions. The movie ponders upon a typically Brazilian situation in which affective bonds are genuine but incapable of dissolving layers of oppression — echoing some aspects of our historical past, namely the period of black slavery. With a subjective narration, the film incorporates photographs, domestic footage and newspaper adds from the 20th century, as well as contemporary images of nannies and children shot in the beaches and parks of Rio de Janeiro.

A vía crucis, ou seja: a via láctea deste filme se passa em espaços não bucólicos e sem muito merengue. Situações em que as pessoas morrem vomitando creme. Cinema Indi-blurp – com gestos. Ducid é um personagem cético no supermercado da vida. E ele parece um contador de histórias bizarro. Jose Luis Ducid, without pasteurization, serves us – sells us – poems with his curdling, his acidic point of sarcasm, and well sprinkled with the powder of realism. The vía crucis, or say: the milky way of this film takes place in non-bucolic spaces and without much meringue. Situations in which people die vomiting custard. Indi-blurp cinema – with gestures. Ducid is a skeptical character in the supermarket of life. And he appears a bizarre storyteller. Facing the “ready-made” commercial cinema, where everything is explained in the screen, but also facing the elegance of hiding the evident or the unpolished, José Luis Ducid arrives, in an ascetic rapture, to cinematographic adamism: the image doesn’t tell, it only suggests, evokes, proposes; one nude frame summarizes the scene, showing only the starting point to the spectator’s imagination, and fulfilling thus the true AUDIO-visual mandate: What you see complements what you hear, and not vice versa. SINOPSE / Synopsis: A relação peculiar entre um personagem indecifrado e um advogado do oeste catarinense, em sua ansiosa espera pelo êxodo de verão para o litoral, é contada somente através de imagens das telas de computador, celular, tablet e da técnica “machinima”. O filme percorre os labirintos mentais deste misterioso personagem, trazendo à tona diferentes pontos de vista para discussões contemporâneas, como o rastro digital e a obsessão das pessoas por estas interfaces que ligam e reservam o real do virtual.

The peculiar relationship between an undeciphered character and a lawyer from western Santa Catarina, in his anxious wait for the summer exodus to the coast, is told only through images from computer screens, cell phones, tablets and the “machinima” technique. The film travels through the mental labyrinths of this mysterious character, bringing to light different points of view for contemporary discussions, such as the digital trail and people’s obsession with these interfaces that connect and reserve the real of the virtual.

“Dance” is a fairly abstract video about people in motion, about saying goodbye, about power and powerlessness and about the tragedy of what appears to be the total interchangeability of the individual in the grand scheme of things. The title itself, ‘Dance’, refers to migration as an unsteady, rhythmically irregular movement, a balancing act.

SINOPSE / Synopsis: “Parade” é um filme de arte realizado no palco de um teatro. A cortina de veludo vermelha se abre, uma valsa lenta, especificamente composta para o filme, começa a tocar, enquanto uma quantidade aparentemente interminável de pessoas passa, em câmera lenta, como um fluxo de transeuntes na rua. Este desfile de personagens diversos pode ser visto como um acontecimento bastante banal, mas também como uma reflexão visual fundamental sobre a vida e a morte. Música e imagem entram em um diálogo notável neste vídeo poético, observador e comovente. Criado com o apoio do VAF – Bruxelas.

“Parade” is an art video staged on the scene of a theatre. The red velvet curtain opens, a slow waltz, especially composed for this film, starts playing, while a seemingly endless cavalcade of people comes walking by, in slow motion, like a stream of passers-by in a street. This parade of diverse characters can be seen as a rather banal event, yet also as a fundamental, visual reflection on life and death. Music and image enter into a remarkable dialogue in this poetic, observant and touching video. Created with the support of VAF – Brussels.

SINOPSE / Synopsis: “Sea of Tranquility” é uma combinação de gravações de vídeo de atores e ambientes digitais em 3D no qual o espectador faz uma visita noturna em uma mística e misteriosa linha de cruzeiro, o mar “Sea of Tranquillity”. A linha fictícia de cruzeiro foi criada por Hans Op de Beeck, seguindo uma curta residência em em Saint-Nazare na França em 2008, quando o artista intrigou-se pela grande história da Segunda Guerra Mundial e a reconstrução pós-guerra do porto da cidade. Aqueles estaleiros produziram as maiores linhas de navios da Segunda Guerra. Ao artista parece que o Queen-Mary 2, era então o Burj Kalifa de Dubai (o maior edifício do mundo), uma boa metáfora para a crença em valores espúrios e em conceitos como trabalho, lazer e consumismo de luxo. Hoje em dia usamos categorias como o mais alto, o primeiro e o maior, mas o que esses termos dizem sobre a qualidade real das coisas? A canção central do jazz é composta por Hans Op de Beeck; música adicional foi composta por Sam Vloemans.

Sea of Tranquillity’ is a combination of live video recordings of actors and digitally-generated 3D environments in which the viewer makes a night-time visit to a mysterious, mythical cruise liner, the ‘Sea of Tranquillity’. This fictitious cruise liner has been designed by Hans Op de Beeck, following a short residence at Saint-Nazaire in France in 2008, during which the artist became intrigued by the remarkable Second World War story and postwar reconstruction of this harbour town, whose shipyards produce the worlds largest cruise liners. It seemed to the artist that the Queen Mary 2, then just completed, was, like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (the highest building in the world), a suitable metaphor for our belief in spurious values and in such concepts as work, leisure time and luxury consumerism. We nowadays use such categories as the highest, the first and the biggest, but what do these terms say about the actual quality of things? The central jazz song is composed by Hans Op de Beeck; additional music has been composed by Sam Vloemans.

SINOPSE / Synopsis: O filme de Hans Op de Beeck “Staging Silence (2)” é baseado em configurações arquetípicas abstratas que permaneceram na memória do artista como o denominador comum de muitos lugares públicos semelhantes que ele experimentou. As próprias imagens de vídeo são ridículas e sérias, assim como a eclética mistura de imagens em nossas mentes. A decisão de filmar em preto e branco aumenta essa ambigüidade: a abordagem teatral do vídeo invoca o legado do pastelão, assim como o suspense insidioso e o descarrilamento latente do filme noir. O título refere-se à encenação dessas decorações adormecidas, onde, na ausência de pessoas, o espectador pode se projetar como o único protagonista. Imagens de memória são misturas desproporcionais de informações e fantasias concretas, e neste filme elas se materializam diante dos olhos do espectador por meio de mãos anônimas de mexer e improvisar. Braços e mãos aparecem e desaparecem aleatoriamente, manipulando objetos banais, representações em escala e iluminação artificial em locais alienantes, porém reconhecíveis. Esses lugares nada mais são do que decorações animadas para histórias possíveis, proposições visuais evocativas para o espectador. O filme de Op de Beeck é acompanhado por uma partitura que, inspirada nas próprias imagens, foi composta pelo compositor e músico Scanner (Reino Unido).

Hans Op de Beeck’s film “Staging Silence (2)” is based around abstract, archetypal settings that lingered in the memory of the artist as the common denominator of the many similar public places he has experienced. The video images themselves are both ridiculous and serious, just like the eclectic mix of pictures in our minds. The decision to film in black and white heightens this ambiguity: the theatre like approach of the video invokes the legacy of slapstick, as well as the insidious suspense and latent derailment of film noir. The title refers to the staging of such dormant decors where, in the absence of people, the spectator can project himself as the lone protagonist. Memory images are disproportionate mixtures of concrete information and fantasies, and in this film they materialise before the spectator’s eyes through anonymous tinkering and improvising hands. Arms and hands appear and disappear at random, manipulating banal objects, scale representations and artificial lighting into alienating yet recognisable locations. These places are no more or less than animated decors for possible stories, evocative visual propositions to the spectator. Op de Beeck’s film is accompanied by a score which, inspired by the images themselves, has been composed by composer-musician Scanner (UK).

SINOPSE / Synopsis: A obra tem como foco o dia de um homem idoso que viveu toda a sua vida na mesma cidade. Enquanto respira com dificuldade, ele executa suas rotinas – comer e verificar as contas. Sons de suas conversas durante o sono se sobrepõem às suas atividades físicas, tendo como pano de fundo cenas de sua antiga residência e uma variedade de ambientes naturais. Atividades físicas durante o dia e conversas durante a noite podem ser os únicos vigores que o velho, que está quase com 100 anos, pode mostrar. Este vídeo ilumina os ambientes onde vive a partir de uma visão distante e de médio alcance, proporcionando uma sensação de distância visual. Por meio do processo de observação das atividades físicas e dos ambientes de convivência de um idoso sob múltiplos ângulos, o trabalho questiona as visões sobre a própria velhice e moradia, bem como condições de vida.

The work focuses on the daytime of an old man, who has lived his entire life in the same town. While breathing hard, he performs his routines – eating meals and checking the bills. Sounds of his sleep talking overlap with his physical activities against the backdrop of scenes of his old residence and a variety of natural environments. Physical activities during the day and sleep talking during the night may be the only vigors that the old man, who is almost at the age of 100, can show. This video illuminates his living environments from a distant and medium-range view, providing a sense of visual distance. Through the process of observing the physical activities and living environments of an old man from multiple angles, the work questions the views on one’s own old age and dwelling as well as conditions of life.

Aprisionada em si mesma, a personagem luta para encontrar-se e viver no presente. Suas confusões temporais envolvem o espectador fazendo-o experimentar de perto essas vivências. A história se passa num vilarejo caiçara em três épocas diferentes revelando muita sensibilidade. O filme traduz uma história de amor, de perda, espera e de aceitação.

“Opening the Windows of Time” is a folklore opera narrated by the songs from unique spectacle from catarinense group Cantadores de Engenho. Imprisoned in oneself, the character fights to find herself and live in the present. Her temporal confusions take over the spectator making him experiment up close these experiences.

While the city sleeps, Vitor roams lonely between the library’s hallway with his lantern. At night, he likes to flip through a big dictionary in search of the meanings of the words. But something mysterious is going to happen and Vitor is the only witness. The movie is based on the story of ‘O Guarda Noturno’ from the catarinense poet Lindolf Bell.

Juntos iniciam uma série de crimes e logo se transformam em queridinhos da imprensa marrom. Fonseca e Pacheco, dois policiais decadentes, precisam capturá-los e reestabelecer a ordem no país.

Beijos de Arame-Farpado is the second part of the trilogy “Trilogia da Paixão Marginal”, a set of three short-movies begun with “Veludo & Cacos-de-Vidro, that seeks to revisit the brazilian cinematography of the 70s decade. In Beijos de Arame-Farpado, Velvet a thief, finds again the love of his life, Cacos-de-Vidro. Cacos, a staggering drifter, comes back once again from a unsuccessful journey in Paraguai. Together they start a series of crimes and become the underground press’s favorites. Fonseca and Pacheco, two decadent officers, need to catch them and reestablish the law in the country.

Her world is shaken by the arrival of Francisco, 15 year old a argentinian boy, Cecília’s grandson. The meeting between the two wakens up the jealously on Valentina’s father, Antônio, and brings back discussions about important things, like life and death.
